Yahfi Bubbles

I'm planning to move the comic strip back to a more cartoony place stylistically, so I'm fiddling around with colors and lines and techniques.  Here is a stab at Yahfi.  Let me know what you think!

Chelyse, Paladin of the Order of the Ancients

This is Chelyse, Ema's character in our current D&D game.  She is a paladin of the Order of the Ancients, and is the upstanding sister of my D&D pc Adryssa. She is the 'straight man' to my 'crazy-ass witch.'

That tom-foolery you are perpetrating?  Yeah, that.  Chelyse is not amused.

D&D Soap Opera Synopses!

Yes, this is Ema.  She thinks she's an elf.  She's
also a law student, so she can PROVE it.
Remember when I used to do lots of recaps of my RPG campaigns?  Yeah, it's been so long I don't remember either.  Well luckily Ema, one of our players, is going to be chronicling our adventures (see last post.) WARNING: this is not for the faint of heart.  Our game is drifting away from anything resembling a dungeon delve and beginning to look a hell of a lot like more like an telenovela version of Game of Thrones filmed in Galadriel's backyard.

Keywords are:

- Elf Laden
- Boddice Ripper
- Reverse Harem
- Bishonen
- Sylvan Weeaboo

Check out her first post!

(May the gods have mercy on my soul.)

Adryssa the Elf Witch

Adryssa is my current PC in our 5e D&D game.  She began life, at least conceptually, as one of the nameless Meat Funnel Mooks in a DCC campaign we played years ago.  I decided that my group of funnel characters were aspiring witches attempting to join a coven.  The survivor would be allowed to join and become a real witch.  Well, two of my characters survived.  I picked Florence the human, a psychotically evil character, to actually play.  The other survivor, Clarissa the human, became Florence's dim-witted lackey.  She would lug around heavy things and manage Florence's journal.  "Take that down Clarissa,' became Florence's catch-phrase.

Before Florence could realize her lifelong dream (which was to take over an orphanage so she'd have unlimited access to sacrificial victims,) the campaign wafted away on the wings of whatever that thing is where people don't play a campaign anymore.  Years later, we were getting prepared to play the 5e version of Ravenloft, and I began to toy with reviving the evil witch Florence.  But bringing an evil, corrupt, psychopathic witch into Barovia just seemed . . . redundant.

Sweet, innocent, dimwitted Clarissa then came to mind.  But could I play her going toe to toe against Strahd?

I decided that Clarissa had escaped Florence somehow, despite Florence frying Clarissa's mind so she could only remember the current day she was living in.  She had to constantly refer to Florence's notebook to remember what was going on.  The notebook would also be her spellbook, as she was now a wizard of the divination school.  I also made Clarissa paralytically afraid of death, crypts, dirt, bugs, and the undead.  There.  I was done.  Clarissa was indeed ready to go toe to toe with a vampire demi-god.

Oh the adventures that were had.  Clarissa made good friends with three child-eating hags - who reminded her of Florence.  This one time at a tavern, she and her friend Chelyse dressed up as gypsy sluts to gain access to some rich guys' house. And there was that time she accidentally set a church on fire and released a rabid vampire into the wild.  She did pick up a Tarokka deck and make it her magical focus, which was nice because she liked to play cards.  But the daft little witch spent most of her time refusing to go into graveyards, running from flaming skulls, and trying to figure out how to kill her friends and put their souls into bottles to escape Barovia.

So, to cut a long story short, we beat Strahd.  Clarissa even got the killing blow.  Well, she didn't.  Her army of creepy porcelain dolls brought to life with Animate Object hacked the vampire to bits while Clarissa hid most of the time behind her B-F-Elf Chelyse the Paladin of Corellon.  As I had picked Inheritor as Clarissa's background, we discovered that Clarissa was not a human, but a sun elf, and actually the .long lost sister of the Paladin Chelyse.  Evil curses, yanno. So, after escaping Barovia, they went back home to Evermeet.

Clarissa turned out to have an annoyingly long real name - Adryssa Ellifayne Dawnbloom, and was a member of royalty.  Eventually she will get bored of courtly intrigue and build a dimension hopping gypsy wagon to hunt monsters in.  But that's a story for another time . . .

It Is With a Heavy Heart That I Announce . . .

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I have turned on the Adult Content Warning for the Rather Gamey blog.

Okay, yeah yeah yeah, I should have probably done it sooner, but I've been waiting for someone - anyone - to have an issue with the blog's content.  Today was that day.

I noticed like a gazillion hits on my article about the Elemental Evil Player's Guide.  Curious (okay, narcissistic) I tracked it back to a reddit post.  The post was about the Guide, and someone had linked to my article for - I think - my photos.  But the original link to my blog had been deleted.  Here is a snippet of the discussion:

It always astounds me that I live in a culture where cartoon female nipples are not appropriate for the workplace, while a cartoon SEVERED FUCKING HEAD goes unnoticed.  I mean, seriously, which employee would you be more worried about - the one looking at nipples during his lunch hour, or the one looking at DISMEMBERED HEADS.

I know the one that I would fire and seek a restraining order from. :)

And I have no idea what stereotype the guy is referring to.  Maybe that some people who play D&D like nipples?  Should we not like nipples?

Anyway, so yeah, after years of nipples, butts, vaginas, and dismembered heads, I finally saw someone complain five million internet miles away, so I've reached my self-defined trigger and have now flagged the blog.  Sorry for the extra click it takes to get here, but THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

PS - I love the "It's a drow.  It's okay." guy!

The Search for Yahfi

The first panel of my next comic strip kind of looked like a book cover, so I made it a book cover of a non-existent book. :)

Dragon Age: Origins

One of our D&D players, Emalynde, who is already a Dragon Age: Inquisition junkie and cosplayer, is doing her first play-through of Dragon Age: Origins and recording it for all to see.  Go watch!

Yahfi's Back

Okay that was an unexpected two month Yahfi drought.  Work and life had other priorities for me.  And getting back on the drawing horse always seems slow and painful to me.  I'm either full steam or dead stop.  I'd like to discover a few gear in between.  Anyway, I'm relaxed now.  Back to Yahfi!

Rat Queens

While I'm posting about adult fantasy comics, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Rat Queens.  It's an actual print comic from Image, and while not as 'adult' as the last four I mentioned, it is certainly grown up.  Rat Queens follows the exploits of Violet the hipster dwarven warrior, Hannah the rockabilly elven mage, Betty the thieving hippie 'smidgen,' and Dee the atheist Cthulhu warlock.

What sold me on the comic was Dee's Intro - "My parents worship a giant flying squid.  Holidays get weird." It has not failed me.  I don't remember laughing quite so much at a comic book in a while.  Out loud.  Rat Queens is one of those things that are worth buying.

My Favorite Adult Fantasy Web Comics

Clumzor's The Party, Rupert Everton's I Roved Out in Search of Truth and
Love
, Totempole's The Cummoner, and Trudy Cooper & Doug Bayne's Oglaf
I read my fair share of comics - from sci-fi to superhero - but what really warms my heart is fantasy stories with plenty of boobs and butts and jokes about dicks.  So, without further ado, here are my four favorite-ist.

Clumzor's The Party - This comic is about a D&D party who's leader, Bug the Gnome, never has any luck in the romance department.  They go on adventures that usually end up with lots of nakedness.  Bambi, the Tiefling Warlock, is my waifu.

Rupert Everton's I Roved Out in Search of Truth and Love - I just ran into Roved the other day, an it's an immediate favorite.  It follows the adventures of the elves Cinder and Maeryll.  The poetic landscape and painterly images really capture a wonderful fantasy feel.

Totempole's The Cummoner - This is the story of the witch Vilga and her unfortunate travelling companion Tuck.  Vilga's magic power is fueled by sex, and poor Tuck is her Energizer Bunny.  It's pretty much exactly what you would expect. :)

Trudy Cooper & Doug Bayne's Oglaf - Okay, what rock have you been living under if you haven't heard of Oglaf?  The weekly strip is full of sexy humor.  Sometimes there is a story - sometimes not.  But there is always something really fucking weird happening that will burn into your retina.

All of these strips are very NSFW - unless you work in an adult book store or a brothel.  Enjoy!

Yesterday You Said Tomorrow

I just put the finishing touches on the 5th Underfeet strip for next week and I'm exhilarated and exhausted all at the same time.  I've been getting this lovely endorphin and serotonin cocktail from drawing.  Like Rob Thomas says, "I get this funky high on the yellow sun."

It's hard to believe that just a month ago, the Underfeet comic was only a hazy dream and some nervously scratched sketches.  The fears that I had - that I couldn't draw well enough, or that I couldn't pull the story off - have simmered to a low boil on the back-burner.  Unlike previous comic attempts in the past - if I have a panel idea that fits the story - I DRAW IT.  I don't adjust the story to images that I think I can draw.

One of my big hang-up with drawing goes back to my childhood days tracing Peanuts cartoons - a fear of not being original.  For years, I've had this idea that I should be able to plop down, alone in an empty room, with pencil and paper and spew out anything in my mind.  Well, you know what?  That doesn't work.

I need references.  For each panel that I work on, I have between 5 and 10 pictures open on my other monitor to stare at.  A body shape reference, a pose reference, a face reference, and several style references - pictures by artists that I like who do noses or ears or eyebrows in a way that I find pleasing.  And I've also got my own strips up there too as a reference, so I can aim for some consistency in character model.  I 'cheat' off of the entire world - even myself.  The better I cheat - the happier I am with my art.

So, are references really cheating? Well, no.  They are a crutch, sure.  Like using a car to get from Texas to Colorado.  I could hoof it.  But honestly, I'd prefer to use a tool to get me there more quickly.  A crutch is just a tool.  References are a tool.

No duh.  But I had to learn that.  Over and over, apparently.

Each weekly strip is taking 8 days to complete.  Yeah - the math is bad on that.  I've got to figure out a way to do a weekly strip in at least 7 days.  I don't want to cut corners, but I'd like to cut down on time.  Not sure how to do that, but I'll figure it out.

Currently, Underfeet is being posted to five places:

Rather Gamey Blog - http://rathergamey.blogspot.com/
Studio Arkhein's G+ Page - https://plus.google.com/u/0/+StudioArkhein/posts
Studio Arkhein's Tumblr - http://studioarkhein.tumblr.com/
Arkhein's deviantArt Gallery- http://arkhein.deviantart.com/
Underfeet Hentai Foundry Gallery - http://www.hentai-foundry.com/user/Underfeet/profile

Some of those places only get like five hits per strip, but as long as people are reading, I'll keep on posting to those places.  Others, like tumblr, never say how many hits - just likes.  So, if you are enjoying the comic, please comment or like or thumbs up or heart or share or repost or whatever.  That gives me a good gauge on what and where I should be posting.  Feedback helps. :)

Again, a big thanks to all of those who have supported me - my family, my gaming group, blog readers and art looker-at-ers.  I appreciate it!
